Rec Sites You Can Trust

It seems like there are a million rec sites out there. Some are multifandom in nature, others are pairing or genre-centric. Quality varies across the board when it comes to these kinds of sites. So how to shift through all of them? DeniZens listed some of their favorite rec sites, the ones they go to find recommendations for fanfiction. These are just a sampling of some of the rec sites out there -- some of the bigger fandoms are represented here, but not all and smaller fandoms may have been omitted entirely. Your mileage will also vary depending on individual taste and preferences.

Many deniZens mentioned that they place a great deal of stock in who is actually doing the reccing and that their trust in certain sites has been built up over time. So consider this a starting ground as guide to some of the freshest fanfic in fandom. You may also want to check out We Read Crap So You Don't Have To, a livejournal where updates to various rec sites are posted. The LJ also features a listing of many rec sites as well for easy access.

So without further ado, here are just a few of the rec sites, listed in alphabetical order:

  • 1001 Cold Showers - Multifandom adult fanfiction. Features recs for X-Men, Voyager, Buffy, Star Wars and more.

  • Best of Trek Fanfic - This one has story and author recs from all Trek series and has been a great source.

  • Bright Shiny Objects - A great multi-fandom rec site with a little bit of everything.

  • The Cortex - It's pretty much an everything rec site for Firefly. Includes slash, gen, and het.

  • Kathy Dailey's Recs - High quality Trek fanfiction recs as well as Buffy, X-Files, and The Pretender.

  • Marina Rusalka does good recs, mostly HP but some BtVS/Angel as well - she's gives in depth reasons why she liked or didn't like something.

  • The Other Side - An X-Files recs site with a great selection of rec as it doesn't focus on any particular pairing or genre of fic.

  • Our Boys - This site isn't updated anymore and it's more of an archive these days, but it's still got some of the best West Wing and Sports Night fanfiction around. It's worth taking a peek at.

  • Pearl-o and Jessica's recs LJ - This site is good for Smallville, Sports Night, West Wing and Firefly.

  • Polyamorous Recommendations Run by Shrift and Nestra. Huge variety of fandoms covered, with gen, het and slash in each, and the welcome page spells out what they will and won't rec, which gives the reader a guideline as to what sorts of stories they're going to find.

  • RabbleRouser's Good Trek Reading - Exactly what the title says with heavy emphasis on The Original Series.

  • Semielliptical is a great spot for Sirius Black/Remus Lupin recs.

  • Stargate SG-1 Recs - Stargate SG-1 slash, gen and het recs.

  • Unfit For Society: Victoria's recs site is useful to people, because now she tries to give both pros and cons, and to be honest when a story isn't particularly well-written, but pushes enough of her buttons for it to be included. The latest recs are always up at http://unfitforsociety.livejournal.com and eventually, they make it to Unfit For Society. There used to be four or five people doing the recommending, but it's mostly all Victoria now. It's multifandom and multi-pairing, and Victoria don't just rec her friends,
